This Support Group was formed in November 2008 and officially registered in February 2009 as a charity group.
The Aim is to eventually raise enough money to be able to set up a much needed day to day care center as a form of respite for the carers and for patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Gibraltar. According to the statistics, 1 in 3 of the local population suffers from a form of Dementia, and we find that the number of patients is rising and of yet, there is no known cure.
Our biggest aim is to start with raising the awareness on the seriousness of this illness and offer any support we can. The elder generations suffer more serious illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other similar dementias from which they find very little support. In most cases, patients are sent to Mount Alvernia or to KG V as their carers "if any" find it very hard to look after them 24/7. There are some patients who still have no where to go or are still on a waiting list.
